This week at First Church, we gathered to celebrate the joy, hope, and love that God brings into our lives and communities. We shared stories from recent ministry opportunities, including our participation in Sauk Valley Pride, where members joined with neighboring congregations to offer a message of welcome, hospitality, and God’s unconditional love. Through these experiences, we were reminded that the church is called to be a place where everyone can find safety, belonging, and grace.
Drawing from Genesis 18 and 21, we reflected on the story of Abraham and Sarah and the surprising joy that came with God’s fulfilled promise. Sarah’s laughter, which began in disbelief, became laughter of celebration when Isaac was born. The message reminded us that God often works in ways we cannot imagine, bringing hope and new life even when circumstances seem impossible. True joy, rooted in God’s promises, sustains us through life’s struggles and connects us to one another in faith.
As we prayed together, we lifted up those who are hungry, lonely, displaced, or longing for peace. We gave thanks for the everyday blessings that fill our lives with laughter and gratitude and asked God to strengthen us to be people of compassion, hospitality, and reconciliation. May we go into the week ahead carrying with us the joy that comes from knowing that God is always making all things new.
